Firewalls

This is a device or set of devices that enable a number of policies between different segments of a network.

Firewalls can be implemented in hardware or software, or a combination of both. Firewalls are used to prevent unauthorized access to private networks connected to the Internet.

All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet specified security criteria. It is also common to connect the firewall to a third network, called the DMZ, where servers are located in the organization that should be accessible from the outside network.
